Celebrating the Advent Season

  • St. Michael the Archangel 424 Southwest Mill Street Portland, OR, 97201 United States (map)

The season of Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas, a season of watchfulness, silence, and expectation.  Here are some things you can do to live this season well:

  1. We invite you to spend at least 10 minutes of silent prayer with the daily Gospel. We recommend that you use The Advent of Rescue, which is available at the back of the church. You can also listen to the Daily Meditation Podcast of the SSJ.

  2. Set up your nativity scene on December 8. You can deposit your written intentions expressing where you want Jesus to come deeper into your life at the foot of the manger.

  3. Make a good confession before Christmas. The Advent Penance Services are Tuesday, December 16, 6:30 p.m., at Old River and Wednesday, December 17, 6:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s.

  4. During the second week of Advent, we invite you to do a week of detachment where you free yourself from unnecessary material things. Go through the things you have and give away what is excessive. In this way, you make room for God to come deeper into your life.

  5. Attend the Advent Preaching Series. Through the writings of Newman, we will develop four attitudes to prepare for the coming of the Lord.
